Central
African Missions with UK base in Preston, operate
in Ethiopia,
Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. this is where many of the missanaries are based “Living Waters” and is situated in Lubumbashi the provincial capital. Virtually non-existent power supplies are a major problem to teachers, translators and all who work on base. In November 2005 James Atkinson (retired Electrical Engineer) was asked to help with the situation.
It was established that a 15kV / 415V packaged substation was urgently required as well as a distribution upgrade and the replacement of many sub standard domestic installations. An order was placed with Power Equipment Services (PES) in March to rewind a 315-kVA 11 kV transformer for 15 kV operation and provide refurbished HV and LV switchgear. this was shiped in a shortened ISO container, which doubbled as the final substation. The local electricity company SNEL have given full agreement and have made the final 15 kV overhead connection.

A local contracting firm provided help with the LV main and distribution switchgear to replace the inadequate equipment. PES the main equipment suppliers shiped the containerised unit in May.
The container then traveld by sea to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and then 1,500 miles overland by truck to Lubumbashi. James and a team of UK volunteers supervised the installation in September & October 2006 giving the base a reliable supply of power for lighting, fridges, computers and water pumping. This enables the dedicated staff to work more effectively.
